UnWined Food and Wine Festival

Date: October, 2019

UnWined is one of WA’s premium food & wine festivals. Here you can enjoy the best of WA’s wine, craft beer, cider, spirits in a festival to celebrate our unique and boutique beverages. Throughout the day you can listen to live music, and enjoy a weekend out on the picnic lawn. Over 45 wineries and 300 different wines were on offer!

For this, I ran a four food and wine pairing sessions over the weekend. On each session, this included 3 tapas style dishes matched with 3 wines that you could compare and contrast.

There were two separate menus, a red wine and a white wine:

White wine:
Savoury egg custard, puffed pork, mushrooms and chicharron
Kimchi tofu and pork dumpling with a soy vinegar sauce
Scallops with onion, pickled shallots and apple gastrique

Red wine:
Fried chicken with a spicy Korean sauce
Pork, prawn and chive dumplings with Szechuan sauce
Miso butter corn with feta and sesame mayonnaise

It was quite challenging to match some wines to some of this spicy food, but Blair Hill & Maria Murphy from the Wine Education Centre did a fantastic job. It was also really hot conditions, over 40 degrees that whole weekend, and working in a tent really showed us how much water you need to drink to keep hydrated! Looking forward to the next one.
